THE HERITAGE OF ENGLISH BONE CHINA
I am passionate about English Bone China.
English Bone China is an important part of our National Heritage and Industrial History. The Industry is currently in decline with much of the knowledge and expertise gained over generations being lost as production is moved overseas.
My china is made in Stoke on Trent using the traditional method from ingredients sourced in the UK.
Bone China is a type of porcelain made from a mixture of bone ash ( 50% ), mineral and clay ( 25% each ). The ash comes from cattle bones. The minerals and clay are brought to Stoke from Cornwall.
It was developed by Josiah Spode around 1790.
English Bone China is well known for its high mechanical strength and chip resistance. The strength allows it to be made so thin as to appear translucent whilst retaining its whiteness.
The production is very labour intensive. Each piece is handled 14 times by skilled craftsman before being decorated.
